With opening up of the economy the middle class in India has benefited a lot. Beginning 1991 when Dr. Manmohan Singh threw open the gates for foreign investment, the middle class has seen the incomes rise very sharply. In fact that has resulted in the a variety of other related things.
Any city that you go to nowadays you will see the mushrooming of restaurants and eateries. Modern India does not like to cook any more at home. Ready made stuff like McDonalds, Subway as well home grown chains like Haldirams are packed with young couples who have no time to cook. Of course it goes without saying that middle class has become more affluent and has the disposable income to eat outside every day.
More and more the lifestyle in the office and at home has become sedentary. You come home from office and watch television on your big screen LCD TV. You eat all junk food sitting in front of the television. No time for exercise with your busy routine.
See the kids of these corporate couples and they are overweight and obese. In fact these are the kind new health concerns that the modern India is facing. Weight problems are now one of the major problems with the middle class population.
In the earlier India it was all about meager resources so most of the time our parents used to eat only at home and eating outside was a luxury. Driving in a car was luxury and walking was considered normal. People were used to doing everything by themselves and now we have all sorts of domestic help. What is it doing to you? Well your body is getting in bad shape.
Weight gain has been a major issue for the last ten years in the affluent middle class. With weight gain there are several other health concerns that are there. A lot of young urban Indians have found this out the hard way.
