Scented candles catching on in India
I have been visiting US on a regular basis for quite a number of years and always the demand from my relatives has been to bring them those stylish scented candles. Most of them including found it very tough to buy any good candles in India. The general notion of candles in India has been that either they are used when there is no electricity or at the festival time which is Diwali.
During my visit to the Megamart stores a few days ago I was surprised to see that there was a whole section for candles only. Though the entire collection was not that huge but still I was able to get all sorts of scents like the Sandalwood , Lavender, Rose and Jasmine. Well I know this nothing compared to some of the best scented candles that you get in the West.
In fact there are shops that entirely dedicated to scented candles in the US. I used to wonder why it is not the same thing in India. Well two things that kind of prevented from candles being bug business. As far as aroma is concerned Indians generally use the incense sticks for that. There are a large number of branded and non branded incense sticks available in any household items shop in India.
The other major root cause is that most of the homes in India are not centrally air conditioned like in the west and that means the mild scents of the candles will not hold when all the windows and doors are open. That is changing as the homes now have air conditioners and also the availability of scented candles is there. In fact Dimple Kapadia started her designer candle making business a couple of years ago. I am sure that if you pay a visit to the new home stores like @Home by Kishore Biyani or the other major retailers like Reliance Trends or the super shops like LifeStyle or Shopper stop you will see a separate section for scented candles for sure.
